The Thermal State of the Upper Mantle; No Role for Mantle Plumes
نویسنده
چکیده
A variety of geophysical data indicates that long wavelength temperature variations of the asthenosphere depart from the mean by + 200øC, not the + 20øC adopted by plume theoreticians. The 'normal' variation, caused by plate tectonic processes (subduction cooling, continental insulation, smallscale convection) encompasses the temperature excesses that have been attributed to hot jets and thermal plumes. Geophysical estimates of the average potential temperature of the upper mantle are about 1400øC. Asthenospheric onvection at ridges, rifts and fracture zones and at the onset of continental breakup is intrinsically 3D, giving rise to shallow pseudoplume-like structures without deep thermal instabilities. Deep narrow thermal plumes are unnecessary and are precluded by uplift and subsidence data. The locations and volumes of 'midplate' volcanism appear to be controlled by lithospheric architecture, stress and cracks.

The role of plumes in mantle helium fluxes
We present a simple model of 3He and 4He transport in the mantle using the appropriate rates of mass and species transfer and 4He production. Previous workers have shown the presence of excess 3He in hotspots such as Hawaii and Iceland and inferred that these hotspots tap a source with a higher 3He/aHe ratio than the source region of mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). Hotspot ocean islands probabl...

We present tomographic evidence for the existence of deep-mantle thermal convection plumes. P-wave velocity images show at least six well-resolved plumes that extend into the lowermost mantle: Ascension, Azores, Canary, Easter, Samoa, and Tahiti. Other less well-resolved plumes, including Hawaii, may also reach the lowermost mantle. We also see several plumes that are mostly confined to the upp...

It has been claimed that focused hot cylindrical upwelling plumes cause many of the surface volcanic hotspots on Earth. It has also been argued that they must originate from thermal boundary layers. In this paper, we present spherical simulations of mantle circulation at close to Earth-like vigor with significant internal heating. These show, in addition to thermal boundary layer plumes, a new ...
متن کاملHotspots and Mantle Plumes: Constraints from Statistical Analysis
Statistical analysis of the global hotspot distribution is made and current state-of-the-art of the theory of mantle plumes is discussed. Both the fractal dimension analysis and the spherical harmonic correlation are performed to infer some constraints on possible hotspots and mantle plumes sources. Such a joint analysis suggests a compound model, in which the upper mantle exerts strong influen...
